JSON Stringify & Escape

Convert

Escape any text into a JSON string — or unescape an escaped string back to raw text.

Stringify and escape JSON strings

Escaping (or "stringifying") turns a piece of text into a single JSON string: it wraps the text in double quotes and replaces the characters JSON can't contain raw — double quotes become \", newlines become \n, tabs become \t — so the whole thing becomes one safe, valid string value.

You need this whenever JSON has to live inside something else: embedding a JSON payload as a string field in another JSON document, pasting it into a code literal, storing it in an environment variable, or putting it on a single line in a log.

Unescaping back to raw text

The reverse is just as common. When you find a JSON value that was stored as an escaped string — a stringified payload in a log line, a serialized field in a database, an API response wrapped in quotes — unescape mode decodes every escape sequence back to the original, readable text. Paste the escaped string with or without its surrounding quotes and the tool figures out the rest.

Escape JSON for code, configs, and logs online

Whenever JSON has to live inside another string — an environment variable, a single-line log entry, a code literal, or a field in another JSON document — it has to be escaped first. Escape JSON online here and get back a single safe string with quotes, newlines, and tabs encoded correctly; switch to unescape mode to turn a stored, stringified value back into readable JSON.

What is stringified JSON?

Stringified JSON is a JSON object or array that has been serialized to a plain string — the result of calling JSON.stringify() in JavaScript, json.dumps() in Python, or an equivalent serialization method. The output is a valid JSON string that contains an entire JSON document, with inner double quotes backslash-escaped and newlines encoded, so the whole document fits safely inside a single string value.

Stringified JSON appears constantly in logs, database columns, environment variables, and API response fields — anywhere structured JSON is stored as flat text. This tool both stringifies (escapes JSON into a safe string) and unstringifies (unescapes a stored string back to readable JSON). The two directions are the exact inverses of JSON.stringify and JSON.parse. For which characters get escaped and why, see how escaping and unescaping JSON strings works.

Capabilities

Everything in the JSON Stringify & Escape

Escape text into a JSON string or unescape a JSON string back to raw text. Handles quotes, newlines, tabs, and unicode correctly. Stringify JSON to embed it in code, configs, or logs. Free & private.

Escape

Turn raw text or JSON into a valid, properly escaped JSON string literal.

Unescape

Decode an escaped JSON string back to the original raw text.

Quotes optional

Keep the surrounding quotes for a full literal, or drop them to paste inline.

Every character handled

Quotes, backslashes, newlines, tabs, and unicode are escaped correctly.

Frequently asked questions

They're the same operation. Stringifying (escaping) wraps text in double quotes and escapes the special characters inside — quotes become \", newlines become \n — so the result is a single valid JSON string you can embed inside other JSON or source code.

Switch to Unescape mode and paste the escaped string, with or without its surrounding quotes. The tool decodes every escape sequence back to the original text — useful for reading a JSON value that was stored as a string, such as a stringified payload in a log.

Yes. Paste the JSON into Escape mode and you get back a single escaped string that's safe to drop into another JSON field, a code literal, or an environment variable. Toggle 'Wrap in quotes' off if you only want the escaped body.

No. Every operation runs entirely in your browser using client-side JavaScript. Your JSON is never uploaded, logged, or stored on any server — it never leaves your device.
