XML to XSD Converter

Convert

Generate an XSD schema from any XML — free XML schema generator, element types and attributes inferred automatically.

Infer an XSD from an existing XML document

When you receive XML data from a partner or legacy system without a schema — common in older EDI, mainframe exports, and undocumented internal APIs — inferring the XSD is the fastest way to understand and document the format. This tool parses your XML, walks every element and attribute, infers value types from text content, and emits a draft XSD.

Elements with child elements produce xs:complexType definitions. Elements with only text content get a simple type attribute (xs:string, xs:integer, xs:boolean, xs:date, etc.). Elements that appear as repeated siblings automatically get maxOccurs="unbounded". Attributes are captured as xs:attribute with use="optional".

Industry use cases

XML-to-XSD inference is heavily used in three areas: legacy system documentation, data-exchange onboarding, and test harness construction.

  • Legacy COBOL/mainframe systems export XML without schemas — inference gives you a schema to validate against in your integration layer.
  • Receiving HL7 v2.x or CDA XML from hospital systems and need to formalize the structure for downstream processing.
  • Reverse-engineering an undocumented SOAP service by extracting sample responses and inferring the schema.
  • Building Kafka consumers that need to validate incoming XML messages against a schema before deserializing.
Capabilities

Everything in the XML to XSD Converter

Free XML to XSD converter and schema generator. Paste any XML document and get a valid XSD instantly, with element types, attributes and nesting inferred.

Element type inference

Detects xs:integer, xs:decimal, xs:boolean, xs:date, and xs:dateTime from text content.

Attribute extraction

XML attributes become xs:attribute definitions with inferred types.

Repeated elements

Sibling elements with the same name produce maxOccurs="unbounded" in the schema.

Mixed content

Elements with both text and attributes are modelled as xs:simpleContent with xs:extension.

Frequently asked questions

The tool reads your XML document, walks every element and attribute, and produces an XSD that describes what it found. The result is a draft schema — good for understanding legacy data or creating a starting point for a formal schema — but it won't capture constraints (like allowed enum values) that can't be inferred from a single sample document.

When the same element name appears multiple times as siblings (e.g. multiple <item> elements inside a <list>), the schema emits maxOccurs="unbounded" for that element. This is the most common XSD pattern for array-like structures.

Yes. Attributes on any element become xs:attribute entries under the element's xs:complexType, with an inferred type and use="optional".

Use XML → XSD when you already have an XML document and need to document its structure or validate similar documents. Use JSON → XSD when you are building a new XML API from a JSON contract, or when you receive JSON from a REST API and need to bridge it to an XML-based system.

No. Every operation runs entirely in your browser using client-side JavaScript. Your input is never uploaded, logged, or stored on any server — it never leaves your device.
